Initially, it is important to understand the underlying factor of a child\u2019s need to sneak food.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Children\u2019s eating behaviors can be affected by an array of factors including parents and peers\u2019 habits and attitude towards food, mother with eating disorders history, trauma, stress or bullying.\u00a0Also, s<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ometimes children find emotions simply too hard to handle, and they use food as a way to feel better.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Why is your child sneaking food?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><strong>Labelling foods\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When parents unintentionally label food as \u201cgood\u201d or \u201cbad\u201d can create a scarcity mentality in children, making those foods either more or less desirable. If there is fear they are missing out, for example telling a child, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis is all you get\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou can\u2019t have any more of that\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> makes the child want it more<\/span><b>.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also, labelling specific foods as \u201ctreats\u201d gives special value to those specific foods. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treat foods usually become an addiction and when consumed it can cause feelings of guilt and shame and thus done in secret.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Children want to please their parents<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most of the time, children want to be \u201cgood\u201d and please their parents, teachers or other adults around them. When their wants (such as having an \u201coff limit\u201d food) conflicts with what they know will please their parents or others, they may resort to engaging in the behavior in secret.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Signs that a child is secretly eating:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finding food wrappers in the child\u2019s room or backpack.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unexplained missing food.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Excess weight gain despite a child seeming to eat very little.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Why is secret eating a red flag for eating disorders?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This pattern of eating can easily become a vicious cycle with the child \u2018hating\u2019 themselves for doing it, but at the same time engaging in the habit more. Besides the health risks that accompany obesity related to excessive binge eating (diabetes, insulin resistance, high blood pressure etc.), those eating habits and mentality can also lead to eating disorders, depression and anxiety.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Signs of disordered eating behavior:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a pattern of eating in response to emotional stress, such as family conflict or poor academic performance<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a child feeling ashamed or disgusted by the quantity they have eaten<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an increasingly irregular eating pattern, such as skipping meals, eating lots of junk food, and eating at unusual times (like late at night).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>What you can do as a parent:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"2\"><b>Bite Your Tongue\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stop commenting on your child\u2019s eating behavior (e.g. \u201cAre you sure you want that for a snack?\u201d).<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>Never say, &#8220;Clean your plate.&#8221;<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Don&#8217;t force your child to eat. Most kids self-regulate and will eat when they need to.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"2\"><b>Stop threatening, rewarding or punishing with food<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You are losing the war when they know you care more than they do. There is so little that kids can control, it\u2019s no wonder some of them use food to manipulate their parents.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>Don\u2019t be the food police<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Relax. Put away your badge and enjoy your own meal. Paying too much attention to what your child eats might be one way to create eating problems.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"2\"><b>Break the shame<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s really important to try and break the shame that your child heels towards food. Try to listen and be understanding, sympathetic and non-judgmental.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>Be a Brilliant Role Model<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t expect your child to eat nutritious foods when you don\u2019t. If you eat with a bag of crisps to watch TV, your child will imitate you.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>Allow \u201cTreats\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your child ask for ice cream, go for it. But choose a small or kid-size portion, not four scoops. Nobody\u2014and that includes you and me\u2014needs that.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make it \u2018\u2019once-in-a-while\u2019\u2019 event.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"2\"><b>Stay patient and neutral:<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parents can get easily frustrated by a child\u2019s obsessive behavior around food. Try not to unintentionally give verbal and non-verbal that might cause the children to feel embarrassed, guilt, or ashamed. Stay neutral and patient throughout the process.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Self-reflect on your relationship with food<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you don\u2019t trust yourself to eat certain foods, this mistrust is likely also being projected on your children. Try to heal your own past struggles and relationship with food.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Go grocery shopping together.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take your child grocery shopping.
