Whether they are unaware that there is a problem, afraid or ashamed to reach out, many sufferers find it difficult to seek help.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, as dietitians we also hear about some of the hurtful and misguided things people say to people with eating disorders so while the intentions may be good, the comments can be insensitive and possibly even harmful.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Recommended Do\u2019s:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Be patient and nonjudgmental<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Try to learn as much as you can about eating disorders<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, there are many excellent organizations and websites with helpful information such as:<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">www.NationalEatingDisorders.org<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 http:\/\/cydadiet.org\/data\/originals\/2014\/11\/leaflet-diataraxes-updated.pdf<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0http:\/\/www.mazi.org.cy\/mazi\/page.php?pageID=5<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Try to be a good role model<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, this is not necessarily always \u201chealthy eating.\u201d If you are also frequently concerned about what and how much you eat you may worsen the problem.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Encourage social activities that don\u2019t involve food<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Take the pressure off in mealtimes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; this means, don\u2019t talk about or make comments about their food, how much they eat or don\u2019t eat, or how they eat.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Understand that the person is not looking for attention or pity<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Be prepared for negative reactions.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Some eating disorder sufferers are glad that someone has noticed they are struggling. Others respond differently. Some may become angry and hostile, insisting that you are the one with the problem. Others may brush off your concerns or minimize potential dangers. Both of these responses are normal. Let them know you care and leave the conversation open.<\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Remove potential stigma.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Remind your loved one that there\u2019s no shame in admitting you struggle with an eating disorder or other mental health issue. Many people will be diagnosed with these issues during their lifetimes, and many will recover.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Stay calm<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Avoid expressing frustration with the person. Express your concerns gently. Ask, \u201cAre you willing to consider the possibility that something is wrong? \u201dExpressing your concerns may be awkward at first, but such efforts can provide the bridge to help the person. Even if the person does not acknowledge a problem during your discussion, you have raised awareness that you are paying attention, are concerned, and want to be a support.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Suggest professional help in a gentle way<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, offer to go along. Offer to help the sufferer find a physician or therapist if they don\u2019t have one \u2014 or leave a list of resources behind for the person to look at on his\/her own.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Recommended Don\u2019ts\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Accuse or cause feelings of guilt<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or place blame on the person.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Do not comment on appearance<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cyou look great today,\u201d as it may be interpreted as you have gained (or lost) weight. Compliment the person\u2019s personality, successes, and accomplishments.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Overly simplistic solutions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0Being told \u201cJust stop\u201d or \u201cJust eat\u201d isn\u2019t helpful. It can leave the sufferer feeling frustrated, defensive, and misunderstood.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Make promises<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or rules you cannot or will not follow (e.g. promising not to tell anyone).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Invade privacy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and contact the patient\u2019s doctors or others to check up behind his\/her back<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Demand weight changes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Discussions that center around numbers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as body weight, calories, and amount of food, time and quantity of exercise.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Take the person\u2019s actions personally\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Do not try to take charge or make threats <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(e.g. if you do this once more I\u2019ll\u2026), you cannot force someone to get treatment and becoming the food police will not help the situation ( but do call 112 if you believe the person\u2019s condition is life-threatening)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even if you don\u2019t feel the discussion was well-received, don\u2019t despair. You shared your concern and let them know that you care and you are there for them. You may also have planted a seed that they should seek help. The seed may not take root immediately, but over time, the concern can help move an individual towards recovery.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lastly, being a good support means that you also have to take good care of yourself and attend to the stresses you feel from the situation. This is important to serve as a model of healthy behavior for the person you are trying to support.
